Artist Statement
My inspiration main focus has been on the structures I have encountered whilst walking along the Severn Estuary and their interaction with the fluidity of the water. I am especially drawn to the angular lines of the structures and subdued colour tones of the surrounding area.
I have used strip cut glass and crucible melting techniques. Which reflect the angularity of the jetty structures, while the crucible melting process, echoing the fluidity of the water.
Within this body of work I have endeavoured to capture these strong and soft elements in the creation of glass vessels while using the subdued colour pallet of the estuary.
Glass by its very nature is unforgiving but it still holds a fascination for me. I’ve learned that it can’t be forced into doing anything it doesn’t want to, it has to be coaxed gently and even then it still is defiant, breaking at the least provocation. It has the ability to alter the depth and tone of colour, which for me, may link into my delight in drawing and the richness of tone that can be achieved with a single colour.
